Best Season Yet - 1st XV Progress
through the Daily Mail Cup |
| |
|
 |
Our 1st XV are currently performing the most successful
season in many years and have had a fantastic start to the 2011/2012 Daily
Mail Cup competition.
Five players involved in the Daily Mail RBS U15 quarter finals at Whitgift
last season shrugged off that disappointment of defeat and have propelled
themselves into the 1st XV with vigour. The physical challenge and risk
usually deters coaches from pushing young players too early but Max Green,
Daniel and Michael Radigan, Jack Maplesden and Rory Masterson rose to the
challenge. In round 3 the team met local rivals BGS and emerged with a
solid 46-0 victory. This was followed by what was billed in the Daily Mail
as the ‘Unofficial Yorkshire Final’ game against the other local
opponents, GSAL.
The Grove team outplayed their opposition and emerged with a 41-6 win to
secured their place in the final 32 nationally. 1st team coach Mr Cadman
said ‘I expected one or two players to bridge the gap between U15’s and
U18’s but not 5, they have given us a new dimension because they have
always possessed a never-say-die attitude.’ |

Match Report Floodlit Cup: Woodhouse Grove V Hutton GS - 18 November |
|
By
Theodore Squires
Woodhouse Grove became the first team to make it through to the Floodlit
Cup semi-finals after an easy 27-7 win against Hutton.
After a slow start to the game Woodhouse began to take control and took
the lead ten minutes in thanks to a Rory Marsterson try, which was
converted by Max Green.
A Green penalty two minutes before the interval extended Woodhouse’s lead,
making the scores 10-0 at half time.
Woodhouse upped their game early in the second half, as Adam May burst
through the Hutton defence to go over for the try after a long period of
Woodhouse possession. Green stepped up to score the extras.
Green scored a try of his own just ten minutes later as he weaved through
Hutton’s defence, evading numerous challenges before touching down to make
the score 22-0.
Hutton finally got themselves on the score sheet after 50 minutes. Curtis
Mitchell fought his way though the Woodhouse defence and was left
unopposed, giving him the time to touch down under the posts. Fraser
Graves stepped up to convert the kick.
It proved to be just a consolation however as Christian Elwiss-Hough added
a fourth Woodhouse try in the final minute to seal the win.
Woodhouse will meets the winners of Bradford GS against St Peters as they
look to secure a place in the final.

Team of the Month - Daily Mail Cup
2010 |
|

|
|
Award Summary - (Source
Schools Rugby) |
A four-year unbeaten run for Yorkshire's Woodhouse Grove u15s
culminated in the Rugby Paper's team of the month award.
The team developed into a formidable unit, led by inspiring captain
and scrum half Jack Maplesden.
Their brilliant run saw them squeeze through some tight matches with
Wirral and Crossley Heath this year.
It was on the road at the mighty Whitgift in the Daily Mail Cup that
they finally met their Waterloo.
Head of rugby Roger Howard said: "Our boys knew they had lost to a
very fine side who skillfully and ruthlessly executed an excellent
game plan in the first half. Whilst we are not a physically large
squad we do have a reasonable amount of power throughout and a healthy
distribution of speed and finishers.
"The forwards have generally been a dominant force, with twins Michael
and Daniel Radigan combining particularly effectively with No 8 Adam
May.
"Centres Max Greene and Rory Masterson have become key members of the
backs."
"We feel honoured to receive this award as it also helps acknowledge
several seasons of hard work" |

Woodhouse Grove on course for double after powering to victories in Round
6 - Reporter Jim Hooley - Daily Mail |
|
For a school to survive beyond Christmas in any of the Daily Mail
RBS competitions competition is a great achievement but to have two teams
still on the road to Twickenham is very special and underlines the
strength of rugby throughout the school. Woodhouse
Grove from Yorkshire have done it fo the first time after a double-header
against South Hunsley and in the U18 Vase and Hutton Grammar in the the
U15 Cup.
The 1st XV took an early lead against east Yorkshire rivals
South Hunsley following a series of driven mauls and when the backline was
unleashed, Dominic Copsey scored from full back in the eighth minute.
The first half developed into a largely abrasive encounter, with both teams
defences on top.

Woodhouse Grove March on two
fronts |
| |
After the snow
break, both Woodhouse Grove teams have made it beyond Christmas in the
Daily Mail competitions for the first time following a double-header
on Thursday 16th December. The Under 18 team have made it
through to Round 6 (Last 32) of the Daily Mail Under 18 Vase while the
Under 15 team have now progressed to Round 7 (Last 16) of the Daily
Mail Under 15 Cup.
Playing against
South Hunsley School, the Under 18 team took an early lead following a
series of driven mauls when the backline was unleashed for Dominic
Copsey to score from fullback in the eighth minute. The first half
developed into a largely abrasive encounter, with both teams defences
on top. The Woodhouse team generally was on top and despite missing a
couple of penalties, they finished the half strongly when England
Under 17 Prop Jake Armstrong made a strong break before showing a deft
offload to Josh Fawcett who scored under the posts. Dominic Copsey
converted to leave the score 12-0, and with the last play of the half
a penalty from Copsey left the score 15-0 to the Grove at the break.
The second half continued to be competitive as South Hunsley showed
good spirit in defence to hold a Grove team that was building a head
of steam. The defence was however breached following a break on the
wing from Harry Mason and good link play saw Inside Centre Fawcett
score his second. Copsey converted to push Woodhouse to a 22-0 lead.
The game was made safe when Outside Centre Aaron Magee scored and the
conversion from Fly-Half Joel Bradley was successful. To South
Hunsley’s credit they did not give up and got on the scoreboard
following some very efficient forward work. The scoring was completed
by Armstrong, who showed typical bullishness to bust through three
tackles to score under the posts. The conversion from Bradley left the
final score 36-5, and will see the team meet either St. Bede’s
Lanchester or Wolfreton School in the next round.
The Under 15
clash with Hutton Grammar School had been eagerly awaited, as it saw
two previously undefeated sides clash for a place in the last 16. The
Grove team is undefeated in its time at the school and it was not long
before Flanker Daniel Radigan had the team in the lead. From an
opposition lineout on the Grove 10 metre line Radigan, stole the ball
and broke through. Fending off a number of challenges, he was not to
be denied and touched down in the corner. Hutton responded very well
and it took some stern defensive work on their try line to keep the
Lancastrians out. However, the Grove team demonstrated outstanding
handling ability and dynamic rucking to keep on the front foot. Prop
James Johnson burst through from the 22 to extend the lead and his try
was converted by Inside Centre Max Green on the ninth minute. Hutton
again attacked, and got close to scoring only to find themselves again
under their posts after the very impressive Green scored and
converted. The ever-probing Captain, Jack Maplesden from scrum-half
finished the try scoring for the first half with a good pick from the
base of a five metre scrum which was again converted by Green to leave
the score 26-0. The second half saw the Grove boys add five further
tries as they dominated proceedings and played with increasing
freedom. Jack Maplesden, Adam May(Number 8), Michael Radigan(Flanker),
Luke Hope-Robertson(Fullback) and Max Green were the try scorers, but
the Hutton team made Woodhouse earn their scores through multi-phase
rugby of the highest order. Green was successful with two conversions.
This was a thoroughly professional display and offers much
encouragement for what will no doubt be a very competitive West
Yorkshire derby match against Crossley Heath School in Round 7.
Roger Howard,
Director of Rugby at Woodhouse Grove, was naturally delighted that
both teams have made it beyond the Christmas break, saying “We are
delighted that in competitions where over 1,800 schools entered that
both our teams have made it to this advanced stage. It certainly gives
an extra edge to rugby at the school after Christmas that we have two
chances to make it to Twickenham and hopefully repeat the success
enjoyed in 2007 when our Under 15 team won the Vase’.
